Without onsite optimisation your website stands very little chance of being ranked in the SERPS.
- First Steps
- Ensure the website architecture you are going to use is search engine friendly, at least 98% of all problems with SEO services arise from poor website architecture.
- Research your keywords – tail end keywords will get traffic quickly and will support your business until the major keywords achieve page 1.
- Create a list of top level ( Major Keywords) and sub level ( Tail End Keywords) from your list of keywords. These will be your web pages.
- Position important keywords at the beginning of page titles.
- Insert important keywords in to the h1 tag you could not fit in to the page title.
- Insert major and tail end keywords in to the main body of the website.
- Use the h2 tag for major elements of keywords within the main body, for example these could be tail end terms – so long as at least one element of the tail end keyword is one element of the major keyword.
- Thereafter write paragraphs about the elements in the h2 tags.
- Use anchor text to link to deeper pages – anchor text for the target page will be the Major Keyword Phrase for the deep page. The deep page should then continue as described above as though it were the home page. Write naturally about your product or service – do not keyword stuff.
- Use relevant external links to link to the home page of the site or deeper pages.
- Always resolve the home link to the root domain.
-
NEVER resolve the home link to anything other than the root domain for example internal links to the home page should be <a href=”/”>Home</a>
Or http://www.domainname.com/ Never use : <a href=”index.html”>Home</a> or any other reference. Why? Because this effectively creates a duplicate page. Although not such s big deal. But if your website home page is something like: www.domain.com/home/ then this is not good because from an SEO point of view the root domain or home page is the most important page of the website and where up to a maximum of 10 major keywords should be used. The rest of the other keywords should be tail end or related keywords and linked to deeper pages. More on internal linking and page construction will be covered at a later date.
There are exceptions for very large sites but in essence – start with top level then add web pages that are sub related to major categories because tail end keywords are easier to rank and therefore should be used in deeper pages of the site.
However, there is nothing stopping you targeting major keywords using deeper pages by adopting the principle as described above – so long as you have a good back link strategy which relates to the theme of the deeper pages.
Do not optimise more than 10 major keywords per page.
- Keyword Density:
This differs upon each keyword phrase and in order to determine the optimum density then you will need an onsite SEO tool to asses the keyword density of your site compared to perhaps one that is already on page 1. This however, will not guarantee page 1 listings but is a major step in achieving optimum positions.

- Tail End Search Terms:
Anything less than SEF urls will hamper rankings on the SERPS. Specifically the use of rubbish in the url such as #,? or &. Google specifically advises to avoid these type of urls. The good news is that in most cases these can be corrected by use of a mod rewrite module.
Difficulty score: 3:10. Most competent developers should be able to resolve these type of issues. If not then it maybe that the CMS ( Content Management System ) or ecommerce shopping cart is of a low or old spec.
Do not be persuaded otherwise. By having none SEF urls can seriously hamper SERPS ( Search Engine Ranking Positions).
When purchasing a domain name, avoid domain names with-hyphens-between-words, specifically if targeting a particular keyword phrase. Why? Because every time an internal link is used on the site, this will score as a keyword phrase and will increase the on site keyword density. Too high a keyword density will result in the particular phrase being penalized by Google as spamming. There is nothing wrong with hyphens between urls - just makes it a little harder to optimise for related keywords that exactly match the url. In short - keep an eye on your keyword density and the number of back link related search terms.
Yes, individual keyword phrases can be penalised without affecting others.
What is the maximum character length of a website page title? As a rule of thumb, 64 characters is the maximum. However, this does not mean to say the that terms beyond this length are not considered by the search engines. It depends upon how competitive the keywords are and relevance to page content.
The first most important factor of a web page is the page title, the selection and position of keywords within the page titles. The page title is the text that describes the relevance and content of a website page and is situated at the top of a browser above the address bar.
The most important element of a keyword within the page title must be at the beginning of the sentence – for example: Free Search engine optimisation Tips…
If,in the example above, the complete page title consisted of: Free search engine optimisation tips, tutorials and advice. Then tail end search terms can be derived from the sentence as follows: Tutorials | Advice |
The search engines would extract tail end search terms from the page title such as: Free tutorials | Free advice | Search engine optimisation tutorials | Search engine optimisation advice | Optimisation tutorials | and so on depending upon the query entered by the user in the search engine.
